LIFTON COMMUNITY PRIMARY SCHOOL
GOVERNING BOARD INFORMATION – March 2017
Lifton School is a ‘maintained school’ and the Governing Board works closely with the headteacher and senior leadership team. Governors have a vital role to play in making sure every child gets the best possible education, encouraging them to ‘Aim high, reach for the stars’. Our three core strategic functions are:
- Ensuring clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction;
- Holding the headteacher to account for the educational performance of the school and its pupils, and the performance management of staff;
- Overseeing the financial performance of the school and making sure its money is well spent.
A considerable amount of energy, time and commitment is required from the Governors who are not paid for their work and willingly volunteer. Governors are required to visit the school for meetings and, as well as for informal visits, they have a schedule of formal visits to monitor the School Improvement Plan. In addition to all of this they take part in job interviews and attend training courses offered by Babcock Education on behalf of Devon County Council.
Governors attend parent forum meetings, open days and other community/parent events held by the School and FOLS (Friends of Lifton School) when parents and members of the community have chance to speak to them. Parent governors are also often found in the playground at the beginning and end of the school day. Results of questionnaires and parent engagement sessions are fed back to the GB by the HT and governors during meetings. The School Council members are sometimes invited to attend and put forward their views at GB meetings. Anyone wishing to speak with a member of the GB can do so through the school administrator.
Our Governing Board reconstituted in March 2015 in line with statutory legislation and has ten members; headteacher, one member of staff who is elected by staff, three parents who are elected by parents, four co-opted members of the community and one who is appointed by the Local Authority. We also employ a Clerk to the Governors, as required by law.
Each governor is required to be a member of a committee, Teaching & Learning (T&L) or Resources, as well as being part of the full Governing Board (GB). The committees have been delegated responsibilities as below, full delegation details are set out in the Terms of Reference (TOR) for each committee. TOR’s are reviewed annually in September by the GB, or as and when required due to a change in legislation or circumstances.
Governing Board: Overall responsibility for the performance and management of the school
Resources Committee: Personnel, pay and performance, finance, premises and health and safety
T&L Committee: Monitoring and accountability of the progress of pupils and the curriculum
Both committees and the GB generally each meet once a term. Occasionally, when the need arises, an additional meeting may be called or a working party set up to discuss or review an issue and make recommendations to the GB. Details of governors, their terms of office and which committee they sit on can be found below.
Chair of Governors: Mrs Vicky Glen
Vice Chair of Governors: Mrs Debbie Martin
